Some web developers offer $99 sites; while others state starting prices at $1,500 or more. So, how much does a website cost? This is one of the most frequently asked questions from potential customers. My usual answer is another question: How much does a car cost?

This analogy is effective in making the point that website costs vary dramatically. Using the car scenario, think about a pick-up truck vs. sports utility or a Sunfire vs. a Rolls Royce.

Do you want heated seats, voice controls, and automatic windows or would you be okay hand-cranking your windows up and down?

Using the website scenario, do you want one page with a logo and contact information or are you trying to rival Disneyworld's site? THREE KEY COSTS OF A WEBSITE

This is your "www.mysite.com", the name of your site. The cost can be about $10 a year.

2. Website Hosting:
A website host rents space to you for all of the files on your site. The cost is normally $4 to $15 monthly depending on the host and the plan.

More often, the cost is expected to be paid annually rather than month-to-month.

3. Website Design and Maintenance:
This is the cost for the design, development, and routine maintenance of the website. Remember the "How much does a car cost?" analogy.

Special technologies and applications like Flash, databases, shopping carts, blogs and advanced programming add to the cost of the development.
